When people start trying to strictly control the flow of media and/or ideas in our society, bad things happen, and this is evidence of it.

EDIT: More ranting. :)

In the Renaissance, artists, composers, and writers were funded by people known as "patrons of the arts". There were no intellectual rights, copyright laws, patents, trademarks, etc. as there are now. Basically, a patron of the arts payed an artist/composer/writer to do what he did best: draw/paint, compose, and write. When the artist did this, he was not just creating art for his benefactor, he was creating art for everyone. This is how every single artist lived for hundreds of years; they lived happy, fulfilling lives for the most part. And the ideas of William Shakespeare, Baldassare Castiglione, Johannes Gutenberg, Miguel de Cervantes, all artists of the Renaissance, greatly contributed to the culture, language, ideas, and artistry of Europe. All ideas were free: if one man thought of a great new way to copy books or write literature, other people were free to take their ideas and use them. The Renaissance was an inspiring generation of humanity.

Now, fast forward to the present day. Greed and pride have diluted our sense of industrialism and every new work of art or idea undergoes restriction of copyright law. No longer are people allowed the freedom to easily distribute ideas to learn and expand; you have to shovel out money by the truckload just to gain the rights to look at something. Listening to music you haven't paid for is considered breaking the law now, and has consequences for those who are caught. But who can control sound waves? Light? Simple, human comprehension? Ford, a major car manufacturing company here in the US, is attempting to make it illegal to take pictures with their cars in it. Why? Because it carries the idea of their car, which is "theirs". What do you think this leads to? Socialism!

Think about it: socialism is all about controlling the possessions of a populace for the "greater good". If thought is considered a possession, what will socialistic governments become? Soon there won't be one idea on this earth that isn't protected somehow by copyright laws or patents. Humans aren't robots, we're social creatures with a need to share ideas and build upon one another to survive. If we can't share the ideas of others, where will that get us?

"Protecting" the ideas and artistic works of others only slows down the process of cultural advancement.

Ok, maybe I'd better be quiet instead.

Thanks for the correction guy. Now that I look at it, the whole bit about socialism was a pretty ridiculous thing to say. However, I still stand by what I said about the Renaissance.
